Strong earthquake jolts Japan, no tsunami warning (Reuters)

SINGAPORE (Reuters) ? A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 jolted eastern and northeastern Japan on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damages and no tsunami warning was issued.

The earthquake measured 4 in central Tokyo, Fukushima and their surrounding areas on the Japanese intensity scale, which measures ground motion, according to Japan Meteorological Agency, which uses a different measuring system than the U.S. Geological Survey.

A spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power said there were no reports of any abnormalities at the tsunami-crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plan following the quake.

Some high-speed train services in northern Japan were suspended after the earthquake, but soon resumed operations, Kyodo news reported.

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake, at a depth of nearly 217 miles, was recorded off Japan's southeastern Izu islands on Sunday at 0527 GMT, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The Hawaii-based U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued a tsunami warning following the earthquake located south-southwest of Hachijo-jima in the Izu islands.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

On March 11, 2011, the northeast coast was struck by a magnitude 9 earthquake, the strongest quake in Japan on record, and a massive tsunami, which triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years since Chernobyl.

The disaster left up to 23,000 dead or missing.

Starting Tips for New Samsung Galaxy SII, Nexus, Transformer Prime, Kindle Fire & More

Verizon

Verizon

If you were lucky enough to receive a new Android smartphone or tablet this year, we have some tips to make your experience easier. We hope you are able to enjoy one the top ten best hottest coolest smartphones of 2011 or maybe the sold-out Transformer Prime or Kindle Fire.

No matter what you?ve got, smartphones and tablets are so complicated nowadays that there usually is a learning curve to get up to speed. In fact, we know intelligent people with PhD?s who have told us that the latest devices take time to master.

1. Take Your Time. Learning how to set up and use your smartphone or tablet can be overwhelming.

2. Read Quick-Starts, Tips and Guides & Watch Videos. Most devices come with a Quick Start Guide. We know you want to get everything working right away, but we suggest that you read the Quick Start Guide. Here are some of our favorite new user tips articles:

Galaxy Nexus owners should be aware of the new features in Android Ice Cream Sandwich (see all features in 4.0 Primer).
Droid RAZR how-to videos.
Don?t be intimidated by the fact that a lizard and frog can play Android games.
Motorola Xoom tablet tips.

3 .Back Up Data. Before you do anything with data, your contacts or email, back it up. With Android-based devices, you may also want to edit your contacts in Google Voice and Gmail because all those contacts will be imported into your Android phone. You will then have to scroll through all those names to find your ?real friends.?

4. Breathe and Relax. This could be a daunting task. If you relax and realize that your ultimate purpose is to make your life easier, don?t pressure yourself, and it should be a little easier. Keep in mind why you need the device in the first place. When you look at your objectives, they will guide your processes.

5. Think Before You Social Sync. HTC Sense, MotoBlur (or social apps on Motorola Droid phones) and Social Hub on Samsung Galaxy SII phones all have ways to bring social media together and sync in some form. Before you unify all your contacts on your new phone, you should consider if you want to know what?s going on every few minutes with all your two hundred Facebook friends. In Android phones and tablets, you can set, if you want, all your feeds checked constantly in the background, which of course drains the battery. If you want longer battery life, shut off background data synching.

6. Keep Your Old Phone or Tablet For a While. If you are with a GSM carrier, such as AT&T and T-Mobile, you can swap the SIM card from your old phone. If anything goes wrong you need to call tech support. All the carriers offer phone support. Also you may forget to copy contact or data from your old device.

7. Get a Live Demo. Many stores offer classes. Check at your carrier?s store or call for an appointment to be shown how to use your smartphone or tablet. This will save you time in the long run.

8. Save Your Boxes, Invoices & Packaging. The boxes and packaging are often needed for shipping and returns. They also have connectors and wires that you may forget. Keep the packaging in a safe place, just in case.

9. You Always Get a Second/Third Chance. If you can?t master your smartphone or don?t like it for any reason, most carriers allow for a 14-day return period, which is often extended over the holiday season. Verizon extended its return time for smartphones bought after November 15 until January 15, with a $35 restocking fee. Returns require the original packaging and invoices. You can check out Wireless and Mobile News Review of Reviews to help decide what model your next phone will be.

UK College Sacks Principal and Wife for ?Being White and Christians?

An independent college in Scotland, sponsored by the Dubai royal family and whose stated aim is to promote multiculturalism, has sacked its Principal - Professor Malory Nye, 47.

Nye and his wife, Isabel Campbell-Nye, 42 - the Head of the Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education's English Language Centre - alleged they were sacked for being white and Christians, according to a report by the Daily Mail. They have alleged discriminatory practices on grounds of racial and religious bias as the reason for their dismissal.

The Dundee-based research institution, which claims to "promote a greater understanding of different religions and cultures in a multicultural context, for the benefit of the wider community", has faced criticism for the decision to sack Nye and his wife, who were reportedly seen as threats to traditional Islamic values.

Nye and his wife, who joined the college faculty 8 and 4 years ago, respectively, were married in an on-campus ceremony, a year ago.

In the report by the Daily Mail, Nye claimed the patron of the college - Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum , the Deputy Ruler of Dubai - did not favor efforts by both Nye and his wife, to give the institution a more cosmopolitan feel. Additionally, Nye also claimed that both Abubaker Abubaker, the Director of Operations, and Mirza al-Sayegh, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Private Secretary to the Sheikh, were against his wife and himself continuing their work at the college.

"It is clear to me that there is collusion between these two individuals that I should be removed from my position on the basis that I am not an Arab and not a Muslim and that the person who has the role of principal should be Arab and/or Muslim," Nye was quoted as saying by the Telegraph.

"My face and lack of Muslim faith no longer fit," he added.

The couple said the college patrons did not detail the reasons behind their dismissals and have filed complaints against the Chancellor of the institution, the College Lord Elder - a friend of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

"Professor Nye was dismissed from his post as Principal at the College following a period of suspension on full pay and an inquiry conducted by the College Chancellor," said the college spokesperson, responding to the duo's formal complaint at the Employment Tribunal.

Honours and medals from Queens and Kings may be an alien concept in Silicon Valley, but they are a delightfully steam-punk tradition, still continued in a Britain which long ago said goodbye to its Empire, yet still has Knights and ?Commander? orders to hand out. Thus, Apple?s chief designer, Jonathan Ive, has been knighted in the Queen?s New Year?s honours list, principally for his work in industrial design and championing British talent abroad. Ive was already made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2006. Being a Knight means he is now Sir Jonathan Ive ? a moniker which should, at the very least, bump him to the front of the average restaurant queue when he?s in London.

The British Consul General in San Francisco, Priya Guha, said that Mr Ive ?epitomises the strengths of British design and innovation?. In response Ive said: ?I am keenly aware that I benefit from a wonderful tradition in the UK of designing and making. To be recognized with this honour is absolutely thrilling and I am both humbled and sincerely grateful.?

The former north-east Londoner is known as the mastermind behind Apple?s hardware, from the iPod the iPhone to the Macbook Air. A graduate of design at Newcastle Polytechnic he moved to California to join Apple in 1992 and led Apple?s design team since 1996. He holds 596 design and utility patents, more than Steve Jobs did, who reached 317.

But New Year?s honours are often political in nature. The Queen is not the one who draws up the initial list but the ?Nominations Team of the Honours and Appointments Secretariat? ? basically a mix on Number 10 and Buckingham Palace officials. The list is then heavily gone over, mainly by Number 10, the office of the Prime Minister.

New Year?s Honours are frequently used to make political points. Steve Jobs was once rumoured to be in line for a knighthood under Prime Minister Gordon Brown, but the story goes that he was refused because he wouldn?t turn up to make a speech in the UK. This sounds like Steve Jobs.

But it?s clear that 2011 was a year which the UK government trumpeted the rise of tech startups and entrepreneurs in its official ?Tech City? policy and its economic stance, particular it?s recent Autumn economic statement which is poised to kick-start the Angel investment market in the UK.

So what better signal to send than to laud one of the architects of Apple?s success as a global tech powerhouse?

UPDATE: It?s worth noting that Tom Harvey, who is an investor who has funded early stage tech in England?s North East has been made a CBE (Commander of the British Empire).

North Korea vows no softening despite new leader (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea warned the world Friday there would be no softening of its position toward South Korea's government after Kim Jong Il's death as Pyongyang strengthened his son and heir's authority with a new title: Great Leader.

North Korea's powerful National Defense Commission said that the country would never deal with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, a conservative who stopped a no-strings-attached aid policy toward the North in 2008.

The stern message also said North Korea was uniting around Kim Jong Un, referring to him for the first time with the title Great Leader ? previously used for his father ? in a clear message of continuity. It was the latest incremental step in a burgeoning personality cult around the son following the Dec. 17 death of Kim Jong Il.

The younger Kim on Thursday was pronounced Supreme Leader of the ruling party, military and people at a massive public gathering on the final day of official mourning for his father.

The top levels of government appear to have rallied around Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s, in the wake of his father's death. Still, given his inexperience and age, there are questions outside North Korea about his leadership of a nation engaged in delicate negotiations over its nuclear program and grappling with decades of economic hardship and chronic food shortages.

"We declare solemnly and confidently that the foolish politicians around the world, including the puppet group in South Korea, should not expect any change from us," the National Defense Commission said. "We will never deal with the traitor group of Lee Myung-bak."

In a bellicose voice, a female news anchor for state TV read the National Defense Commission statement, saying the "evil misdeeds" of the Lee administration reached a peak when it prevented South Koreans from visiting North Korea to pay respects to Kim Jong Il, except for two delegations led by a former first lady and a business leader, both of whose husbands had ties to North Korea.

North Korea had said foreign official delegations would not be allowed at the funeral but that it would welcome any South Koreans who wanted to travel to pay respects to Kim.

"Even though we lost Kim Jong Il, we have the dear respected Kim Jong Un," Kang Chol Bok, a 28-year-old officer of the Korean People's Internal Security Forces, told The Associated Press. "We will turn our profound sorrow into strength and courage."

The North's statement is a warning for Seoul not to take the new leadership lightly, said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea expert at Seoul's Dongguk University.

"It is also raising the stakes in case the South wants better relations so Pyongyang can extract greater concessions" during any later talks, Koh said. He added that it's "too early to say the North is dashing hopes for reforms."

While blasting the South's leader, the North also offered a bit of hope for improved ties with the South, saying it "will continue to push hard toward the path of improved relations."

But it added that any better ties won't be "based on the deceitful ploys South Korea is employing by mixing 'toughness' and 'flexibility.'" Seoul has signaled a change in its approach toward Pyongyang in recent months, saying it will be more flexible in dealing with the North.

South Korea's Unification Ministry will maintain its North Korea policy and not react to every statement out of Pyongyang, according to a ministry official who declined to be identified citing the sensitivity of the relations between the countries.

On Thursday, a somber Kim Jong Un stood with his head bowed at the Grand People's Study House, overlooking Kim Il Sung Square, named for his grandfather, who founded modern North Korea. A huge crowd of mourners gathered below.

Kim Jong Un was flanked by top party and military officials, including Kim Jong Il's younger sister, Kim Kyong Hui, and her husband, Jang Song Thaek, who are expected to serve as mentors of their young nephew.

"The father's plan is being implemented," Ralph Cossa, president of Pacific Forum CSIS, a Hawaii-based think tank, said of the transfer of power. "All of these guys have a vested interest in the system and a vested interest in demonstrating stability. The last thing they want to do is create havoc."

Titles are important in North Korea and part of the myth-building surrounding the Kim family legacy.

Kim Il Sung, the country's first and only president, retains the title Eternal President even after his death.

Kim Jong Il held three main positions: chairman of the National Defense Commission, general secretary of the Workers' Party and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army. According to the constitution, his position as chairman of the National Defense Commission made him Supreme Leader of North Korea.

Kim Jong Un was made a four-star general last year and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party. Since his father's death, North Korean officials and state media have given him a series of new titles: Great Successor, Supreme Leader and now Great Leader.

Disappointing Italian Debt Auction Sends Euro Lower

EURUSD hit fresh lows of 1.2858 yesterday, after an Italian auction of long-term debt did not go nearly as well as the shorter term auctions the day before. The yield on 10-year bonds was just a whisker lower than the unsustainable 7% level (at 6.979%), and in spite of the Treasury aiming sell EUR8.5bn of its debt, only around EUR7bn could be placed. The silver lining to be gleaned from the event?
