At 83, he gave his kidney to a stranger

Nicholas Crace is no stranger to giving to strangers. He spent most of his career directing charities that helped the mentally ill, terminally ill, elderly and others in need.

He also gave mightily to Brigid, his wife of nearly 60 years. After she had a stroke in 2005, he cared for her for six years until she died in the summer of 2011 ? and then he was astonished to have time on his hands.

Crace, who lives in the village of Overton in Hampshire, England, became a volunteer driver for a local hospice, but that didn?t keep him busy enough. The lifelong blood donor wanted to continue giving blood, but he was told the cut-off age for donations was 70. He began thinking about donating his bone marrow, but the age limit for that was even younger: 40.

What Crace did instead set records in the United Kingdom and captured the attention of doctors on this side of the Atlantic: At age 83, he became Britain?s oldest living kidney donor and the country?s oldest ?altruistic donor.? He opted to give a kidney to a complete stranger.

?The chance of changing someone?s life?
Crace shared a detailed and thoughtful diary of his journey toward kidney donation with TODAY.com. In it, he reflected on the practical and emotional motives that prompted him.

?The Practical are the facts that I am fit, have no dependents or responsibilities, am retired and have plenty of time,? Crace wrote. ?The Emotional are that I have led an easy, comfortable and selfish life, enjoyed excellent health and want to repay some of my good fortune.?

Crace said he realized thousands of people are waiting for a suitable kidney, and many die while waiting.

?I couldn?t have lived with myself with the knowledge that I had had the chance of changing someone?s life and turned it down,? he said.

Dr. Bryan Becker, a transplant physician in Chicago and past president of the National Kidney Foundation, described Crace?s act as exceptional.

?It?s unusual for someone in their 80s to be a living kidney donor,? Becker told TODAY.com. ?Living donation is rare in the U.S. even for individuals in their 70s.?

The National Kidney Foundation noted that transplants performed from living donors have advantages over transplants from deceased donors: A kidney from a living donor usually functions immediately, and survival rates of living donor kidneys are higher.

?Altruistic donors are very special people,? Annabel Ferriman, chairwoman of the British charity Give a Kidney ? One?s Enough, said in a statement. ?They have the imagination to understand the suffering that people go through on dialysis while waiting for a transplant, and the courage and generosity to do something about it.?

Since 2006, when an altruistic living kidney donation campaign kicked off in the United Kingdom, nearly 100 men and women have given healthy kidneys to people they didn?t know, Ferriman said.

In the United States, 160 people donated kidneys anonymously last year, and 443 donated kidneys to strangers through a paired exchange program, according to the National Kidney Foundation.

In Crace?s case, it was important the he had the physical fortitude to do what he wanted to do. Over a period of six months, he had to make 14 separate visits to the hospital for tests and examinations. Each visit required a round trip of just under 100 miles.

In his journal, he recounted how delighted doctors were when tests showed he possessed ?Formula One kidneys.?

?It seems that my filtration rate was 95 milliliters a minute compared with 50 milliliters a minute average for someone my age, and is better than most 40-year-olds,? he wrote.

Idealistic aims
Finally, in late April of this year, Crace underwent a successful surgery and headed home from the hospital with just one kidney. He said he was elated to hear that the anonymous recipient of his kidney, a woman in her 60s, was recovering well.

Crace wrote in his diary about an additional motive ? a romantic one ? that inspired him to donate a kidney to a complete stranger:

Gonzalez hits 3 homers as Rockies rout Astros 13-5

DENVER (AP) ? Carlos Gonzalez's swing appears effortless. The results have been smashing.

Gonzalez extended a power surge by hitting three home runs in his last three at-bats, Michael Cuddyer belted a grand slam and Dexter Fowler also homered, leading the Colorado Rockies past the Houston Astros 13-5 on Wednesday night for their third win in a row.

"All I've been doing is trying to put good swings on the ball," Gonzalez said. "Obviously, I'm not looking for a home run. I'm just looking to hit the ball hard and just make sure it's in the strike zone. I saw three around the strike zone and put a good swing on them. Home runs just happen. I think special nights are just meant to be."

He's been awfully special at the plate lately, going 10 for 16 with five home runs, seven RBIs and six runs scored in his last four games. He has 13 homers on the season.

"His focus at the plate right now, his plate discipline, is as good as I've ever seen it," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. "He's stepping to another level, that's how dangerous he is."

The game was not without some concern for the Rockies, however. Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki left the game in the top of the seventh with what the team said was a strained left groin. Tulowitzki appeared a little gimpy as he returned to the dugout after running out an infield groundout in the bottom of the sixth.

"We don't know anything more than just that. We just have to wait and see to what extent," Tracy said of the injury to Tulowitzki, who was scheduled to be re-evaluated on Thursday.

Gonzalez said he just wants to see Tulowitzki get healthy as soon as he can.

"I just want him to be healthy and get right and we all believe he's going to be even better," Gonzalez said. "He's showing signs that he's going to contribute a lot to this team, and I know he's going to do a lot of damage and help the team when he gets back."

Gonzalez did much of the damage against the Astros, breaking a 5-5 tie with a solo shot leading off the fifth off Lucas Harrell (4-4).

"He is a good hitter. If you leave something out over the plate, he's going to hit it hard," Harrell said.

Gonzalez added a two-run drive off reliever Xavier Cedeno as part of a six-run sixth and then had another solo shot, driving the first offering from David Carpenter into the right field seats in the bottom of the eighth inning.

It was Gonzalez's first career three-homer game. He has had four multihomer games this season and eight in his career.

Cuddyer connected in the first inning on the first pitch he saw from Harrell for his seventh career slam and second this season, but it had to survive a replay review by the umpires after a fan reached over the right field railing to catch the ball. The replay showed the ball had cleared the yellow boundary marker atop the right field scoreboard before being caught.

Fowler, who had a game-ending RBI triple among his team record-tying seven hits in Monday's doubleheader sweep of Houston, doubled and scored in the second inning and had a three-run homer off reliever Rhiner Cruz in the sixth for his career-high eighth home run of the season.

"The home runs were the difference," Astros manager Brad Mills said. "Five home runs with the first being a grand slam. We battled back and had a lot of hits. But they won it. They got the five homers."

Harrell, who outdueled the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw in a 3-1 victory last time out, gave up a career-high nine runs on 10 hits in five innings. He struck out four and walked three.

Christian Friedrich (3-1) allowed five runs on 11 hits in six innings, shaking off a rough third inning in which the Astros scored four runs.

Chris Snyder had a two-run double, Chris Johnson had a sacrifice fly and Justin Maxwell added an RBI single as the Astros pulled into a 5-5 tie. But Houston couldn't sustain the momentum, losing its fifth in a row and its sixth straight to the Rockies at Coors Field.

The Rockies' run total was the highest allowed by the Astros this season, surpassing the previous high of nine, which the Astros had done twice this season, most recently in a 9-7 loss to Colorado in the opener of Monday's doubleheader.

EU calls for 'banking union' to ease crisis

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The European Union's executive office on Wednesday said the 17-country eurozone needs a "banking union" that can centrally oversee and ? if needed ? bail out the sector, which has become a weak link in the continent's financial system.

Fears that the cost of bank rescues could cause governments to need bailouts of their own have been fueling Europe's debt crisis in recent months.

Spain is in a particularly bad situation because its banks are not only holding massive amounts of shaky government bonds but also sitting on huge losses on real estate investments. The country's borrowing rates have hit record highs this week as investors worry it does not have the money to save its banks. One of them asked for ?19 billion ($23.6 billion) last week.

But Europe's attempts to address the weakness of some countries' banking sectors has been hindered by the lack of a central authority with the power to tell banks what to do to improve their balance sheets. That power remains in the hands of the dozens of national regulators.

Highlighting the urgency of the issue, the European Commission suggested Wednesday that regulation of the entire eurozone banking sector be done centrally and that the cost of bailouts be shared.

"Ambitious steps to accelerate and deepen financial integration may be needed. Already before the crisis, it was acknowledged that the EU model of cross-border banking was not stable," the Commission said in a report on how to deal with the financial crisis which has pushed the shared single currency to the brink of breakup.

Part of the proposal would see the eurozone's permament bailout fund, the ESM, charged with helping pay for bank bailouts. That would protect individual governments from having their public finances overwhelmed by the cost of rescuing a bank.

"Direct recapitalization by the ESM might be envisaged," the Commission's report said.

EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said the ESM should be better able to help out troubled banks across national borders if need be. In the future, "the building blocks could include a banking union with integrated financial supervision and a single deposit guarantee scheme," he said.

Germany, however, has long been against such an arrangement because, as the currency bloc's paymaster, it would fund the lion's share of any expenses the European bailout fund runs into. German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said there was no change in the country's views: "The German position on direct recapitalization of banks from the European rescue fund is known."

EU Commissioner Olli Rehn cautioned that the plan might call for the reopening of an EU treaty, a politically risky affair in the best of circumstances.

The European Commission also made specific recommendations to nations mired in the financial crisis on how to manage its national budgets and rein in debt and spending.

Spain, which is currently the focus of the European financial crisis, should be given an extra year ? to 2014 ? to get its budget deficit back within European targets.

Rehn said the Spanish government should be given such an extension only if it can effectively control the excessive spending in the semi-autonomous regions and present "solid two year budget plans for 2013 and 2014."

In this case, "we are ready to consider proposing an extension of the deadline to correct the excessive deficit by one year," Rehn said.

Spanish financial markets improved briefly on the news, with the government's 10-year bond yield edging down. The respite proved short-lived as investors focused on the longer-term challenges facing Spain, which is in its second recession in three year, suffers unemployment of near 25 percent and has not yet made clear where it will find money to fund its latest bank rescue, of lender Bankia.

The commission also recommended that Spain "accelerate the increase in the statutory retirement age," and take steps to reintegrate elderly people in the job market. The commission said Spain should tax labor less and rely more on environmental and consumer spending taxes.

In France, as in many other countries, the Commission recommended the country "adopt labor market measures to ensure that older workers stay in employment longer" as well as take steps to make young people more employable.

The commission recommended that Ireland correct its excessive deficit this year, and take further action to address youth unemployment. It also said Ireland needs to pursue the fight against tax evasion, and simplify the regulatory framework for businesses.

European leaders will consider the Commission's recommendations before making a ruling at a summit in June.

Kansas governor signs bill to ban Islamic law

The law has been dubbed the "Shariah bill" because critics say it targets the Islamic legal code. Legislators supporting the bill said there were many cases around the country where judges or state agencies cited Shariah law in deciding cases, especially involving divorce-related custody and property matters where Islamic code differs from U.S. law.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations in Washington denounced the Kansas law and said it is considering legal action.

About 20 states have considered similar legislation but the Kansas law is the only one signed in recent weeks, council spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said.
