Why You Should Avoid Diet Foods | Health, Fitness, Diet and Weight ...

One of the most often quoted misconceptions when it comes to dieting is that you somehow need special foods to go about doing this. The food companies have taken this idea and blown it out to epic proportions, one only needs to go to any grocery store in the country to see aisles and aisles of specialty ?diet products? which all claim to help the eater lose weight faster as compared to those who are eating regular food.

The truth of the matter is that this is about as far from the truth as you can get. If you?re looking to be healthy but don?t have the money to shell out for all of these high priced diet foods, you?re not incapable of losing weight. The fact of the matter is that if you choose to live healthy it?s a lifestyle, not a diet. Eating diet foods may help people lose weight, but unless those people choose to camp out in the diet aisle for the rest of their lives, the moment they start eating ?normal food? again the weight will come back on and they will be stuck in an endless yo-yo procession.

The real secret to losing weight is to make reasonable changes in your lifestyle that you can maintain for a long period of time. If you can?t afford specialty ?diet foods? or simply have no interest in consuming them regularly for the rest of your life, you?d do well to avoid them. Where you?d eat diet foods, instead start eating fresh fruits and vegetables, and try to stay far away from processed foods of any kind.

Not only are diet foods expensive, in many ways they may be more detrimental to your health than you realize. More and more nutritionists are speaking out against dietary additives like artificial sweeteners, saying that at the end of the day they are both bad for your body and relatively ineffective when it comes to losing weight. A better strategy is to slowly wean yourself away from sweet foods in general, rather than simply getting addicted to artificial means of sweetening products. In addition, there have been some studies that suggest that eating artificial sweeteners could be harmful to your health. These studies have not as yet been substantiated, but the fact that their harmful capabilities are in question should discourage most consumers from eating them.

Essentially, even those who are not on a budget should avoid diet foods. Instead, learn how to enjoy real foods, and you can save both money and inches on your waistline!

Walking Around: Home Improvement...

I'm on a mission to find inspiration lately. We have a few projects on the home front that need to kick-off this year.?

#1. Paint the ugly yellow hallway to a beautiful shade of blue dusk?(courtesy of Restoration Hardware)
#2. Re-do bedroom closets (thanks to elfa at the Container Store)
#3. Get picture framed for bf's office (courtesy of April Sevens in Chicago)
#4. New bedding...this has been a struggle for me, I had my eye on a few different patterns - where I am typically challenged is deciding a color palette for the room. The walls are beige - it's probably going to stay that way, do I keep it neutral??
#5. The Fireplace. This will be one of the most fun projects - taking down wall cabinets (that I have NEVER been fond of) painting the walls a lighter color, incorporating reclaimed wood and built in shelving including a bar and wine fridge. And most importantly, getting the fireplace to a better working condition without smelling like gas.?
#6. Shades. There are heavy curtains in the living room right now that just block out the west facing natural light that always produces beautiful shades of pink and orange at sunset. We would love to get automatic shades that we can control when the sun is too bright and creates a glare on the tv.?

#7. Picture Wall. I have been wanting to do this in every apartment I've ever lived. We have some great photos but I'm also planning on combing the web for unique prints, black and white photography. I think adding dimension with Vintage letters, and antlers would be fun;)

#8. Patterns. Everything is a bit flat with solids right now - with the exception of my cowhide rug and zebra chair. I think it would be so nice to layer in patters, bold colors and accessorize.

The...if we win the lottery wishlist:
#9. The Kitchen would be amazing with painted cabinets, lighter colored marble, stainless steal appliances. It's a loft style apartment with high ceilings and the kitchen flows into the living room - so the lighter colors would really make it feel larger.
#10. Master Bathroom re-haul. Tile, rain shower faucet, the works!

Here is my Pinterest folder for 'Home Renovation'. More to come on that...

Athambile Masola

By Athambile Masola

Last month Premier Zille?s tweets caused yet another outrage across the social networking world. Many took umbrage with her reference to education refugees from the Eastern Cape who have flooded schools in the Western Cape running away from the dismal quality of education.

I did not follow the furore as closely as I should have as I was recovering from my first term of teaching, in the Western Cape. I decided to spend some of my school holiday (at home) in East London and Grahamstown, in the Eastern Cape. Conversations inevitably led to the Premier?s tweet and her defence and justification for using the word refugee. I was moved by the extent of outrage amongst friends and I found myself taking umbrage with all the talk about education and refugees in a democratic country such as South Africa.

Premier Zille?s defence was in the attempt of reclaiming the word refugee for herself and how she understands it in the context of the chaotic education system in South Africa where people are voting with their feet and leaving the Eastern Cape for greener pastures in other provinces. As a teacher and someone from the Eastern Cape, I empathise with those who have had to relocate because their basic right to education in the Eastern Cape is being flagrantly disregarded. I have been asked numerous times why I did not stay in the Eastern Cape and teach in schools where there is the most need.

My reasoning has always been about the practicalities of teaching: the Western Cape Department of Education issued several vacancy lists for teaching posts whereas in the Eastern Cape there were none. Friends who decided to stay in the Eastern Cape and teach have still not been paid their first salary. These conditions amongst many others made it easy for me to consider a teaching post in the Western Cape where I have been paid regularly since January. But above all, I made the choice to move to the Western Cape. As a citizen of this country, the right of movement is one that I value as an individual.

The discourse of displacement and education refugees makes me uncomfortable considering that all citizens have the freedom of movement in this country. I doubt that yuppies would be dubbed as employment refugees when they move to the Western Cape for better employment opportunities (as is the case with many friends who decide to become lawyers and accountants and remain in the Western Cape after they have graduated from local universities). I doubt middle-class learners who move to the Western Cape (and attend private schools and expensive public schools) form part of the group of education refugees. It seems that education refugees refers to learners from poor, working class and marginalised communities. This implies that the freedom of movement is taken for granted for people who have the social capital to move, but those who are poor and in most need, it is problematised.

As a woman whose legacy is about forced removals and carrying the dompas as my grandmother did during apartheid, the freedom of movement and the choice to be able to move where I want to move is one I do not take for granted. It seems bizarre that the freedom to basic education can affect the freedom of movement as we have seen happen in the Eastern Cape. As a teacher who is well aware of the travesty that is taking place in the education system, I wish more people would be enraged by the state of education in the Eastern Cape (and all poor people in this country) rather than deconstructing Premier Zille?s misuse or disuse of the word.

WoW Pets ? The Best Pets For The Hunter Class | Dog Training Blog ...

    Browse >
Home / Pets / WoW Pets ? The Best Pets For The Hunter Class

For the World of Warcraft player who embarks on his journey as a Hunter, having a pet will often keep you company, as Hunters often opt for a solo adventure.

Aside from keeping your Hunter company, the pet has a far deeper purpose. Your pet can give you a tremendous advantage when battling monsters. This is good news for you as it minimizes the odds of you taking damage that could have been otherwise avoided.

With all the different types of pets available, it will take some experimenting to decide which pet is best for you. Each type of pet has its strength as well as weakness, so there is no best overall pet. It just comes down to your personal preference. In this article I will explain the ups and downs of each pet. This will help you decide which pet is best suited for your style.

There are a few steps that need to be taken first before you can go in search of a pet. The first step is to tame a pet, and this can be achieved by finishing a taming quest and then completing the quest. Once you have these two steps under your belt, you?re ready for your first pet.

If you happen to own a real pet, do you regularly feed it? The answer is obviously ?yes?, and you want to treat your Warcraft pet the same. Periodically feeding your pet will ensure that it remains happy, and a happy pet will demonstrate its loyalty by dealing over 100% damage to enemies. Content pets will deal damage at 100%. Be a negligent pet owner and your pet will show its dissatisfaction by dealing below 100% damage. In some cases, your pet may just run away.

Now when it comes to choosing your pet, here are the attributes of each one. Pets such as cats, hyenas, ravagers, and wolves, can use the dash ability which increases their speed.

If you prefer ninja like abilities, then a cat is a top choice. Cats can use stealth, which enables them to creep up on enemies unnoticed.

Pets of flight like the bat and owl are good for close range damage. Their screech ability allows them to deal damage while lowering the attack power of nearby enemies.

If you want a pet that just gets in the enemy?s face and do damage, then cats and ravagers are not bad choices, though you will have to be careful as these pets have fairly low health meters. The reverse is true for pets like the bear and gorilla, which have high health stats, but does not deal the strongest damage.

There is much more that can be explained about each pet, but doing so would take an entire manual. Hopefully this article at least gave you an idea of what pet would be best suited for your style.

Samsung throws in free extended battery with VZW Galaxy Nexus, applies to new purchases only

Samsung must be keenly aware that the Galaxy Nexus' battery life takes a hit on Verizon's LTE network: for a limited time, the outfit's throwing in a free 2,100mAh extended battery for first-time buyers (sorry, current Nexus owners are out of luck). To take advantage of the promotion, you'll have to purchase it through Samsung Direct (link below), which means you'll be paying $300 for the device and agreeing to a two-year contract. As Android and Me notes, though, you'd save quite a bit of money picking up the VZW Nexus and accompanying battery pack at Amazon for a combined $134. Suffice to say, then, this isn't a stellar deal, but those of you who disagree can avail yourselves through May 10, or while supplies last.

WALTER RUSSELL MEAD ON THE LEGAL EDUCATION BUBBLE: First, let?s indenture all the lawyers.

In other words, for many young Americans, going to law school will mean literally signing away their financial independence for the rest of their adult lives. They will spend the next twenty-five years of their lives (if they never earn more than their Income-Based Repayment amount) ? ten years if they work in public service ? servicing debt they incurred for a skill that didn?t pay off. They might spend even longer before they are ever in the clear if they took those federal loans out before 2009 (when IBR kicked in), or if they have high interest private loans.

This isn?t just a problem for the people involved. The result is a situation no one wants: young people who aren?t in a financial position to make major steps in life ? marriage, purchasing a home, having children, or saving for retirement ? because they spend the majority of their life financing a decision they made at 22.

Read the whole thing ? especially if you?re considering law school. I wouldn?t advise people not to go to law school, necessarily, but I would advise almost anyone to avoid taking on significant debt to do so.

New understanding to past global warming events: Hyperthermal events may be triggered by warming

ScienceDaily (Apr. 2, 2012) ? A series of global warming events called hyperthermals that occurred more than 50 million years ago had a similar origin to a much larger hyperthermal of the period, the Pelaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), new research has found. The findings, published in Nature Geoscience online on April 1, 2012, represent a breakthrough in understanding the major "burp" of carbon, equivalent to burning the entire reservoir of fossil fuels on Earth, that occurred during the PETM.

"As geologists, it unnerves us that we don't know where this huge amount of carbon released in the PETM comes from," says Will Clyde, associate professor of Earth sciences at the University of New Hampshire and a co-author on the paper. "This is the first breakthrough we've had in a long time. It gives us a new understanding of the PETM." The work confirms that the PETM was not a unique event - the result, perhaps, of a meteorite strike - but a natural part of Earth's carbon cycle.

Working in the Bighorn Basin region of Wyoming, a 100-mile-wide area with a semi-arid climate and stratified rocks that make it ideal for studying the PETM, Clyde and lead author Hemmo Abels of Utrecht University in the Netherlands found the first evidence of the smaller hyperthermal events on land. Previously, the only evidence of such events were from marine records.

"By finding these smaller hyperthermal events in continental records, it secures their status as global events, not just an ocean process. It means they are atmospheric events," Clyde says.

Their findings confirm that, like the smaller hyperthermals of the era that released carbon into the atmosphere, the release of carbon in the PETM had a similar origin. In addition, the warming-to-carbon release of the PETM and the other hyperthermals are similarly scaled, which the authors interpret as an indication of a similar mechanism of carbon release during all hyperthermals, including the PETM.

"It points toward the fact that we're dealing with the same source of carbon," Clyde says.

Working in two areas of the Bighorn Basin just east of Yellowstone National Park - Gilmore Hill and Upper Deer Creek - Clyde and Abels sampled rock and soil to measure carbon isotope records. They then compared these continental recordings of carbon release to equivalent marine records already in existence.

During the PETM, temperatures rose between five and seven degrees Celsius in approximately 10,000 years -- "a geological instant," Clyde calls it. This rise in temperature coincided exactly with a massive global change in mammals, as land bridges opened up connecting the continents. Prior to the PETM, North America had no primates, ancient horses, or split-hoofed mammals like deer or cows.

Scientists look to the PETM for clues about the current warming of Earth, although Clyde cautions that "Earth 50 million years ago was very different than it is today, so it's not a perfect analog." While scientists still don't fully understand the causes of these hyperthermal events, "they seem to be triggered by warming," Clyde says. It's possible, he says, that less dramatic warming events destabilized these large amounts of carbon, releasing them into the atmosphere where they, in turn, warmed the Earth even more.

"This work indicates that there is some part of the carbon cycle that we don't understand, and it could accentuate global warming," Clyde says.

    Hellward - Mission 2

Alright, we just wrapped up the first mission and we've even had a few people interested in the RP. We have a good enough number of players but I'd still like to extend the offer to anyone else who's looking for an original RP based in the future.
It qualifies more as a science-fantasy than a science-fiction but we've certainly had some technological jargon thrown around in the story thus far. At this stage in the story the teams are balanced between the monstrous mechanical invaders and the last vestiges of humanity in the galaxy.
The game is inspired by the Japanese Mecha genre; the goodguys offer your choice of EXCAP (an aerospace fighter and supply ship) or the Neurosuit, powerful humanoid machines with all the same natural reflexes and movements of the human body. Joining the Exomachina allows you to play as a nearly unstoppable mechanical horror, a living machine bent on humanity's destruction. They will definitely bring some of the darker elements to the RP.

I encourage multiple characters, at least one or two characters on the Hellward side and at least one character with the Exomachina. High writing skill is appreciated and is certainly an asset but it is by no means a requirement to join the RP. As long as you are fairly creative and somewhat active you are welcome to help us with the story.

The game is a blast so far, the Hellward Division just fought back an army of machines that pushed an asteroid through a black hole straight into the empire's fleet, an army lead by a creature made of gold who could absorb metal to become bigger and stronger. It was a tough fight!
